27th Aegean Sea Cruise of the Aegean Group
Consistency in Offer Overcomes any Difficulty
Fourni, Agathonisi, Arkioi, Lipsi, Patmos, Kinaros, Amorgos, Folegandros, Koufonisi
13 to 24 May 2021
for 27η year, the Aegean Team was close to the inhabitants of the small and critical islands, recognizing the difficulties that the pandemic has created in conducting medical examinations for the inhabitants of the small and critical islands.
In the midst of a pandemic, the residents' concern about the possible spread of COVID-19 on their island, as well as the difficulty in transportation, caused the postponement of important scheduled and preventive medical examinations. The Aegean Team met these needs with exceptional success, giving even greater value to the holding of this year's Diaplo.
In the 12 days of Diaplo, the inflatable boats of the Aegean Team traveled more than 500 nautical miles to offer services to the islands: Fourni, Agathonisi, Arkioi, Lipsi, Patmos, Kinaro, Amorgos, Folegandros, Koufonisi.
Doctors from 13 different specialties, nurses and specialized paramedical staff participated in the mission and 1.650 residents were examined.
Implementing the cooperation of the Aegean Group with the Hellenic Pulmonary Society (H.P.E.), the Hellenic Rheumatology Society & Professional Association of Rheumatologists of Greece (H.E.P.E.-E.P.E.P.E.) and the Hellenic Cancer Society Company (E.A.E.), residents were given the opportunity to meet their needs in matters critical to their health.
Residents, in addition to medical examinations, had the opportunity to carry out microbiological / biochemical examinations, as well as mammograms, thanks to the mobile mammogram unit of the Hellenic Cancer Society in Amorgos.
Special mention should be made of our visit to Kinaro, where Kyra Rini (the only resident of the island who holds up the Greek Flag at this point on the map) was given the opportunity to carry out her examinations, and also to transport a patient from Amorgos at the Rhodes Hospital accompanied by a doctor from the Aegean Team.
Adhering to the protocols to limit the spread of COVID-19, the Aegean Team conducted approximately 1.000 rapid tests on the residents of the islands. All volunteers of the Team were subjected to molecular testing (PCR) before departure and after their return. They were also subjected to rapid tests during the Mission.
The Aegean Team donated medical equipment to health facilities, equipment to schools along with educational material and implemented infrastructure projects on the islands. Specifically:
- in Fournos, Reconstruction of a basketball court in the courtyard of the Gymnasium
- in Lipsi, Ambulance Shelter at the Multipurpose Medical Center
- in Patmos, Ramp for the disabled in Kambos for free access to the sea (it is the third ramp for the disabled built by the Aegean Group)
- in Amorgos, Gymnasium in Arkesini
- in Koufonissi, Reconstruction of the playground
- donation of tablets to the students of the islands
For the safety of residents, the value of implementing the vaccination program and observing protective measures to limit the spread of COVID-19 was emphasized, emphasizing the great value these acquire during the tourist season.
We thank E.P.E. E.R.E.-E.P.E.R.E and E.A.E. for our cooperation in joint actions and the participation of their doctors in the 27ο Diaplo.
